📜 Nebbiolo d'Alba
Red wines from Nebbiolo grown around Alba, outside the Barolo and Barbaresco zones.
Nebbiolo d'Alba is a red wine made from the Nebbiolo grape around the town of Alba in Piedmont, north-western Italy. The area lies outside the Barolo and Barbaresco zones, where the same grape makes more famous and costlier wines.
The word nebbiolo is often linked to nebbia, fog: in a foggy autumn the berries ripen late. Wines from this grape are pale in colour but have high tannins and acidity, with aromas of roses, cherry and tar. Nebbiolo d'Alba is usually softer and more approachable, and it matures earlier than Barolo. It can be drunk a few years after the harvest.
The appellation covers still red wines, although sparkling versions also exist. It is protected as a PDO. Nebbiolo d'Alba is a good way to get to know nebbiolo without a big price. It suits meat, pasta with mushrooms and the aged cheeses of Piedmont.
