🍷 Partially dealcoholised wine
Wine from which part of the alcohol has been removed.
Partially dealcoholised wine is wine from which part of the alcohol has been removed, but not all. Under European Union rules its strength must be at least 0.5% and lower than usual for that wine category. If the alcohol is below 0.5%, the wine is called dealcoholised, or alcohol-free.
The alcohol is removed after fermentation, when the wine is already finished. There are several ways: gentle vacuum distillation at low temperature, membranes that separate the alcohol, and a spinning cone. All of them try to keep the aroma and taste of the wine. But part of the flavour is still lost: without alcohol, wine feels thinner and sweeter.
Such wine suits those who want to drink less alcohol. It belongs to the lower-alcohol wines and sits between ordinary and alcohol-free wine. But it still contains alcohol, so it is not suitable for pregnant women, children and drivers.
The name on the label shows how the strength was reduced. Rules may differ between countries.
