Appellation ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 1

A simple, fresh white wine from Chardonnay grown on the outskirts of Chablis.

Petit Chablis is a simple, fresh white wine made from Chardonnay. It is produced on the edges of the Chablis area, in northern Burgundy, France. The name is protected as a geographical indication of the European Union and is listed in the eAmbrosia register.

It belongs to the zone called Chablis and Grand Auxerrois. The vineyards here lie on younger and less chalky soils than in Chablis itself. So the wine is lighter, with a simpler, fresher taste, and usually costs less.

The wine is still, meaning without bubbles. It is most often dry, with high acidity and notes of green apple and lemon. It is usually not aged in oak, to keep it fresh. It is drunk young.

Petit Chablis is the simplest level in the Chablis family. Above it stand Chablis, Chablis Premier Cru and Chablis Grand Cru. For a beginner it is a handy way to meet the style without spending much.
