📜 Chablis Grand Cru
The seven best slopes of Chablis above the Serein river, with white wine from Chardonnay.
Chablis Grand Cru is the top category of wines from the village of Chablis in northern Burgundy, France. It consists of the seven best slopes on the right bank of the Serein river: Blanchot, Bougros, Les Clos, Grenouilles, Les Preuses, Valmur and Vaudésir. The wine is white, dry, made from Chardonnay.
The soil here is special: limestone with small fossil oyster shells, formed in the Jurassic period. Because of this the wine gains bright minerality and freshness, and the aroma recalls citrus, chalk and sea air. The slopes face south-west and get plenty of sun. Good wines can keep for ten years and longer.
The appellation belongs to Chablis and Grand Auxerrois and is protected as a PDO. Chablis Grand Cru costs more than ordinary Chablis or Chablis Premier Cru. The wines are usually served with oysters, fish and white meat. Unlike many Burgundy whites, they are often aged in steel or large oak to keep a clean taste.
