📜 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet
The smallest of the Montrachet white grands crus, in Chassagne-Montrachet.
Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet is the smallest white grand cru of the Montrachet group in Burgundy, France. The vineyard lies in the commune of Chassagne-Montrachet, beside famous neighbours, Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet. The plot is tiny, so there is little wine and it is expensive.
The wine is made only from Chardonnay. It is full yet fresh, with notes of citrus, nuts and white flowers. Limestone soil and the position on the slope give the berries a balance of sugar and acidity. With years the wine develops and can keep for a long time. It is a still wine, without bubbles, made in small volumes.
Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet belongs to the Côte de Beaune, the southern part of Burgundy's Golden Slope. Grand cru is the highest level of the local classification. Like most such wines, it is usually served with fish, poultry and soft cheeses, not too cold. Given the small volume and high price, it is more often known by name than tasted.
