π Piquepoul Blanc
A white grape of Languedoc, the basis of the fresh Picpoul de Pinet.
Piquepoul Blanc is a white grape from Languedoc, in southern France. The name comes from Occitan words meaning βlip-stingerβ: the wine has plenty of acidity and feels bracing. Piquepoul comes in three colours, black, grey and white, and the white one is the most common.
The grapeβs main area is Picpoul de Pinet, on the edge of the salt lagoon of Thau, close to the Mediterranean. This is a white wine with a protected name, made only from this grape. The wind and the nearby sea bring coolness and a slight saltiness.
The wine is pale, fresh, with citrus notes and bright acidity. It is drunk young and chilled. The classic match is oysters from the Thau lagoon and other seafood.
Piquepoul has long been grown in Languedoc. It belongs to the Piquepoul family of varieties and thrives in the hot southern climate. Alcohol is for adults and best taken in moderation.
