🍇 Piquepoul
An old Languedoc grape known for the white wine Picpoul de Pinet.
Piquepoul is an old grape of Languedoc in southern France. It is known for the white wine Picpoul de Pinet. It comes in three colours: Piquepoul Blanc (white), Piquepoul Noir (black) and Piquepoul Gris (grey).
The grape name is translated as "lip-stinger" because of its high acidity. The most widespread is white Piquepoul, which makes fresh dry wine by the Thau lagoon. Black Piquepoul is rarer. All three belong to one family and are related. The grape likes heat and copes well with dry summers while keeping its acidity.
Piquepoul grows in Languedoc and is also part of Rhône blends. The wine is fresh and light, with citrus and salty notes. It is traditionally served with oysters and seafood, which are plentiful on the lagoon coast. The grape reflects well the character of France's Mediterranean coast. It is an example of an old local grape that has not lost its importance. The wine is best drunk young, within a year or two of the harvest.
