📍 Languedoc
Hills and plains stretching from Nîmes to Carcassonne.
Languedoc is a large wine area in southern France, from Nîmes to Carcassonne, along the Mediterranean. It belongs to the historic Languedoc-Roussillon, one of the country's biggest wine-growing areas. It includes hills, plateaus, coastal plains and the foothills of the Cévennes.
The climate is Mediterranean: hot, dry summers, plenty of sun, and the mistral and tramontane winds. Red grapes include Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Whites include Grenache Blanc, Picpoul, Rolle (Vermentino), Chardonnay and Mauzac.
The area is split into dozens of appellations: Corbières, Minervois, Saint-Chinian, Faugères, Pic Saint-Loup, La Clape, Picpoul de Pinet, Limoux. Famous sparkling wines are Blanquette and Crémant de Limoux. Muscats include Frontignan, Lunel, Saint-Jean-de-Minervois and Mireval. The Pays d'Oc wines have freer rules, with many single-grape bottlings.
Languedoc is valued for its variety and fair prices: next to mass-market wines, small estates make characterful wines from old vines. Neighbouring Roussillon to the south and the Rhône valley to the east belong to other wine worlds, while Languedoc covers the Mediterranean part around Montpellier, Béziers and Narbonne. On a label, look for the name of a specific appellation rather than just “Pays d'Oc”.
