📜 Saumur-Champigny
Red wines from Cabernet Franc around Saumur.
Saumur-Champigny is a protected appellation in the Loire valley of France. It lies around the town of Saumur in the Anjou-Saumur area. Red wines are made here from Cabernet Franc. They are among the best-known reds of the Loire.
Cabernet Franc gives a wine that is light to medium in body, fresh, with aromas of raspberry, violet, pepper and graphite. Tannins are soft and acidity good. The soil is limestone, including tuff, and cellars are cut into it. The wine is drunk young, slightly chilled, and the best examples can keep for years. It can be served with poultry, pork, pâtés and goat cheese.
Saumur-Champigny is a still red wine and belongs to the Loire reds, which differ in many ways from the fuller wines of Bordeaux. Nearby, whites from Chenin Blanc and Rosé d'Anjou are made. It is a good example of a fresh red from a cool climate.
