Grape variety βœ” Checked: 10.2026 Β· sources: 2

A red grape from the Karst and Istria, making tart dark wines.

Terrano, or Teran, is a red grape from the Karst in Slovenia and from Istria in Croatia. It also grows in Italy, in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, where the area is called Carso.

The Karst is a limestone plateau with reddish soil rich in iron. It is not easy for the vine here: the soil is poor and summers are dry. The berries are small, with thick skins and high acidity.

Terrano wine is dark, almost inky, with aromas of wild berries, cherry and pepper. The acidity is bright and the tannin noticeable. So the wine goes best with fatty food: ham, sausages, meat. In Istria Teran is traditionally drunk with the local ham.

Terrano is a typical wine of the Karst and Istria and part of their local cuisine.
