🍇 Blauer Portugieser
A red wine grape of Central Europe that makes light red wines.
Blauer Portugieser (“blue Portuguese”) is a red wine grape of Central Europe. Despite the name, it has no link to Portugal. Reference sources regard Slovenia as its home, and from there it spread across Europe.
Today Portugieser is grown in Austria, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia and other countries. In Germany it is common in the Pfalz and Rheinhessen, and in Austria in Lower Austria. It ripens early and gives large crops. Its wines are light and soft, with low acidity and few tannins, tasting of red berries and cherry. They are drunk young.
The grape is often made into rosé. It is also the parent of several new varieties, including Domina, Blauburger and Dakapo.
Portugieser belongs to Slovenian wine and to Central Europe. It is a simple, accessible grape for everyday wines. They are served lightly chilled, with light dishes. Alcohol is for adults.
