🥃 Tamnavulin
Single malt Scotch distillery and brand at Tomnavoulin in Speyside; opened in 1966 according to the brand; part of the Whyte & Mackay portfolio (Emperador).
Tamnavulin is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery and brand at Tomnavoulin, near Ballindalloch, in Speyside. According to the brand, the distillery opened in 1966. It is part of the Whyte & Mackay portfolio, and Emperador Inc. stated in 2023 that it owns Whyte & Mackay.
History. The distillery closed temporarily in 1995 and reopened in 2000; a major refurbishment followed in 2007. In 2010 the stills were reshaped to give a richer new-make spirit suited to wine cask maturation, according to the brand.
How it is made. The brand says natural spring water from the surrounding mountains is used in mashing. The spirit matures first in American white oak ex-bourbon casks and is then finished in a second, different cask.
The range. Double Cask was the first expression of the current range, launched in 2016; the Red Wine Cask series began in 2019 and the Port Cask Edition was released in 2024. The core range also includes Sherry Cask and White Wine Cask editions.
Why this matters to you. A finish is only the last stage of maturation. By law Scotch must mature at least 3 years in oak and be at least 40% ABV. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
