📍 Terra Alta

Appellation ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 6 Updated:

A southern plateau zone known for white Garnacha.

Terra Alta (“High Land”) is the southernmost wine zone of Catalonia, on a high plateau in the province of Tarragona, near the border with Aragon. It is part of Catalonia. The plateau lies a few hundred metres up, the climate is dry, winters are cool and summers hot, with the cierzo wind.

The zone is best known for white wines from Garnacha Blanca (Grenache Blanc). It gives fresh, aromatic wines with floral and herbal notes, and richer ones when aged in barrel. Grapes often grow on old vines without irrigation, giving small yields and concentration.

Reds are made from Garnacha, Cariñena, Tempranillo and other grapes, including international ones. Terra Alta used to be a place of mass winemaking; producers then moved to quality, and wine from here is now valued.

For visitors, the zone offers a quiet rural atmosphere and old cooperative cellars. To the north-east lies Priorat, and to the east the coast of Tarragona. White Terra Alta suits fish, rice and seafood, while the reds and older barrel-aged whites suit meat dishes.
