📜 Teran
A dark red wine from Refošk grown on the red soil of the Karst.
Teran is a dark red wine made from the Refošk grape. It is produced on the Karst, a limestone plateau on the border of Slovenia and Italy, not far from Trieste. The name is protected, so true Teran comes only from there.
The Karst soil is red clay rich in iron. It is called terra rossa. It gives the wine a dark colour, and the taste is said to be special here. Refošk gives wine with high acidity, firm tannins and a dark berry aroma. Young wine is sharp, so Teran is usually given time to mature.
Teran is a still red wine: no bubbles, not fortified. Local people have long drunk it as an everyday wine with snacks and meat, especially smoked meat. Refošk is also known as Refosco. It is one example of how a place shapes wine: the same berries grown elsewhere would give a wine with a different taste.
