🥃 Armagnac

Grape product ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 9

A French brandy from Gascony, usually distilled once.

Armagnac is a French brandy, a strong spirit made from grapes. It comes from Gascony in south-western France and is one of the oldest brandies in the country. It is related to Cognac, but the two are different drinks.

Armagnac is made from white wine of varieties such as Baco Blanc, Folle Blanche, Meslier-Saint-François and Trebbiano Toscano, known in France as Ugni Blanc. The wine is usually distilled once in a special continuous still. The spirit is then aged in oak barrels. Age on the label is shown in the same way as for Cognac: VS, VSOP and XO.

Armagnac should not be confused with Floc de Gascogne, a sweet aperitif made in the same area from grape must and Armagnac. Compared with many other brandies, Armagnac often keeps a more rustic and pronounced character. The name is protected by law, so it may only be used for a spirit from a defined zone.
