🍇 Zweigelt
Austria's most widely planted red grape, bred in 1922.
Zweigelt is the most widely planted red grape in Austria. It was bred in 1922 by the Austrian breeder Fritz Zweigelt in Klosterneuburg. He crossed St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch. It was named after its creator.
The grape is loved for its simplicity and reliability. It ripens well, gives a high yield and is adapted to a cool climate. The wine is ruby, with the aroma of cherry, blackberry and pepper, soft tannin and fresh acidity. It is drunk young, but aged wines are also made from good sites.
The grape grows in Burgenland, Lower Austria, around Lake Neusiedl and in other areas. Rosé is also made from it.
Zweigelt is an example of a modern variety that became national: its wines are seen as the calling card of Austrian reds.
