📍 Neusiedlersee
The eastern shore of the lake, with botrytis wines.
Neusiedlersee is a wine zone in Burgenland, eastern Austria, on the eastern shore of Lake Neusiedl, near the Hungarian border. It is part of Burgenland. The lake is shallow and warm, and the surrounding flat steppe plain (Seewinkel) means hot summers and morning mists over the lake in autumn.
Mists and warm days are ideal for noble rot (botrytis). So the area is famous for sweet wines: Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese and Ausbruch. The villages of Illmitz and Apetlon are especially known.
Reds are made from Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch: DAC Neusiedlersee for dry Zweigelt-based reds has been in force since the early 2010s. These are soft, fruity wines, sometimes aged. Among whites grow Welschriesling (Italian Riesling) and other varieties.
A trip to Neusiedlersee combines wine with the nature of the lake, where many bird species nest. On the western shore of the lake lies another zone, Leithaberg, and in the east runs the border with Hungary. Sweet wines are served with foie gras, blue cheese and desserts, while red Zweigelt is better with roast poultry.
