📍 Velké Pavlovice
The main zone for red wines.
Velké Pavlovice is a wine subregion in South Moravia in south-eastern Czechia, close to the border with Austria and Slovakia. It is the main red wine zone of Czechia: red wine is made here more often than in other parts of the country. The area belongs to the Moravia wine region, where almost all Czech winemaking is concentrated.
The climate is warm, under the influence of the Pannonian plain, with a long, dry summer. This lets red grapes ripen. The main reds are Frankovka (Blaufränkisch), Svatovavřinecké (St. Laurent), Zweigelt and Modrý Portugal. The wines are usually soft, with cherry notes and often light acidity. White grapes such as Welschriesling and Pinot Gris are also grown.
Soils are loess, clay and sand. In many villages rows of cellars are dug straight into the slopes, and tastings and local wine festivals are held there.
Velké Pavlovice is part of Moravia. Mikulov, Znojmo and Slovácko lie nearby, and across the border the Austrian Lower Austria and Burgenland. The red wines of this area go well with Czech meat dishes such as roast pork. The name Velké Pavlovice on a label shows that the grapes grew in this very area, which makes it easy to look for similar wines.
