🍇 St. Laurent
A red grape close to Pinot Noir; popular in Austria and Czechia.
St. Laurent is a red grape close to Pinot Noir. It is grown in Austria and the Czech Republic, where it is called Svatovavřinecké. In looks and taste it resembles Pinot Noir, but is darker and more spicy-tart.
The exact origin of the grape is uncertain; DNA shows it is an offspring of Pinot Noir. Today it is popular in central Europe: in Austria in the Thermenregion and Burgenland, and in Moravia in the Czech Republic. It ripens early, so it suits a cool climate. The vine is fussy: sensitive to cold and disease.
The wine has a ruby colour, the aroma of cherry, blackberry and spice, gentle tannin and a velvety texture. Good wines age, and then pick up nutty and smoky notes.
St. Laurent became one of the parents of Zweigelt and of a number of other new varieties, for example Rondo. In the family tree it stands next to Pinot Noir.
