📍 Rosalia
Hills in northern Burgenland.
Rosalia is a small wine district in the north of the federal state of Burgenland in eastern Austria, in the foothills of the Rosalia mountains on the border with Lower Austria. The district is named after the Rosalia mountain range.
The climate is cooler than in other Burgenland districts. The influence of the mountains makes the red wines fresh, spicy and bright in acidity. Soils are varied: limestone, sand and clay.
The two main grapes are the reds Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt. Blaufränkisch gives structured wines with black cherry and pepper notes, Zweigelt softer, fruitier ones. Under the DAC rules, Rosalia produces red wines and rosé, the rosé also from these grapes.
Rosalia is part of Burgenland and lies near Leithaberg, another Burgenland district known for red Blaufränkisch. Rosalia Blaufränkisch suits roast poultry, duck and sausages, and the rosé summer appetisers. The name Rosalia on a label shows that the grapes grew in this very area, which makes it easy to look for similar wines.
