π Alibernet
A red teinturier grape bred in Odesa, Ukraine.
Alibernet is a red grape variety with very dark juice, known as a teinturier. It was bred in Odesa, Ukraine. The variety came from crossing Alicante Bouschet and Cabernet Sauvignon. The name is built from the beginnings of its parents' names: Ali from Alicante and bernet from Cabernet.
The berries contain pigments in both skin and flesh, so the wine is almost black and dense, with dark-berry aromas and tannins. Alibernet is often used in blends to add colour to other varieties. Single-variety wines also exist. The grape tolerates heat well and suits the south.
It is grown in the Odesa region, in the Bessarabia (Budjak) area, as well as in Tairove, Kurortne and the Odesa Black Sea coast. The grape also grows in Moldova. Alibernet is an example of Ukrainian breeding, and Ukrainian wine has many local varieties. It is a new variety by winemaking standards, created by breeders.
