📍 Odesa region
Ukraine's largest wine region, with the most vineyards.
Odesa region is the largest wine-producing region of Ukraine. It has the largest vineyard area in the country. The region lies in south-western Ukraine, on the Black Sea coast. Summers are warm and dry, winters mild.
The region has two large areas: Bessarabia (Budjak) in the south-west and the Odesa Black Sea coast. Both local and international varieties are grown: Aliberne, Telti-Kuruk, Aligoté, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay. Aliberne and Telti-Kuruk are considered varieties typical of southern Ukraine.
Winemaking here developed over centuries, but grew especially in the 19th and 20th centuries. Dry, dessert and sparkling wines are made from the grapes, along with cognac-type spirits. Odesa region is part of Ukrainian wine as its main area. Ukraine has a law on grapes, wine and viticulture products (adopted in 2024, fully in force since 2026) that sets common rules for the sector. For visitors it is a chance to get to know winemaking by the sea.
