📍 Odesa Black Sea coast
A coastal zone around Odesa with a viticulture institute and sparkling wines.
The Odesa Black Sea coast is a wine zone in south-western Ukraine, around the city of Odesa and along the Black Sea. It is part of Odesa Oblast, one of the largest grape-growing areas in the country. Summers are warm, winters mild, the landscape is open steppe, and the sea nearby softens the climate and helps the grapes ripen.
The zone includes the settlement of Tairove and the town of Ovidiopol on the Dniester estuary. Tairove is known for the research centre of viticulture and winemaking named after Tairov, where new grape varieties for southern Ukraine are studied and bred.
Growers here make dry and off-dry white and red wines as well as sparkling wines. Grapes planted include Aligoté, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and Alibernet. Alibernet is a dark-skinned variety bred in Ukraine, giving thick, deeply coloured wines.
The coast is regarded as one of the oldest wine-growing districts of Ukraine, so "Odesa" is a common mark of origin on labels. For comparison with its neighbours: to the west lie the Danube-side vineyards of Bessarabia, and to the east the Mykolaiv and Kherson regions, where grapes also grow in a hot steppe climate.
