🏭 AS Babuni
Polish pasta maker from Niemce near Lublin, producing egg and eggless pasta from wheat flour since 1992.
AS Babuni is a Polish pasta maker based in Niemce, a village just north of Lublin in the Lublin Voivodeship. The company name goes back to a small chain of three grocery shops called AS, opened in 1991 by two brothers and a friend. A year later they planned a factory making noodles that would taste like the homemade ones grandmothers once rolled by hand ("babunia" is Polish for granny) – hence the name AS Babuni. The first package left the line in 1992: a 4-egg krajanka, thinly cut noodles for chicken broth.
Over the following years the company added machines not only for pasta but also for pasta-based dog food, groats and, later, wafers and crisp waffle snacks. According to the company, the 4-egg krajanka is still rolled three times and packed by hand, and the wheat flour comes from local farmers.
The pasta range has two lines. AS Babuni Makarony Jajeczne is egg pasta made from wheat flour and pasteurised egg mass, mostly chicken egg, with one product made with quail eggs; most of its shapes are fine soup noodles (krajanka, nitki, zacierka, kluski), plus wide wstążki ribbons similar to tagliatelle. AS Babuni Makarony Bezjajeczne is eggless dry pasta from wheat flour coloured with turmeric: spaghetti, świderki similar to fusilli, rurki tubes, pappardelle nests, lasagne sheets, fale and thin nitki.
Unlike classic Italian dry durum wheat pasta, both lines are made from common wheat pasta flour. The company is a member of the Polish Pasta Chamber (Polska Izba Makaronu) and exports to the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Ukraine.
