Red wines from Carignano on the sands of south-western Sardinia.

Carignano del Sulcis is a protected appellation in south-western Sardinia, Italy. Red and rosé wines are made here from the Carignan grape. The area is called Sulcis and lies on sandy lands near the sea.

Carignan has grown on Sardinia for a long time and has the local name Carignano. In Sulcis it grows on sandy soils and so often keeps its own roots: sand does not suit phylloxera, the tiny pest insect. Old vines give few berries, but the berries are concentrated. The wine is dark and soft, with notes of ripe berries, Mediterranean herbs and spice, and moderate tannins.

Carignano del Sulcis is a still wine, red and rosé. It is drunk with meat, pasta, local cheeses and seafood dishes. It belongs to Italian wine and to the Carignan grape. In France and Spain the same grape grows as Carignan and Cariñena. It is a good example of an island with its own character.
