📍 Bullas

Appellation ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 6

A mountain zone in western Murcia.

Bullas is a mountain wine zone in the west of the Murcia region in south-eastern Spain. It is one of the highest-lying districts of Murcia, so the vineyards lie noticeably above the surrounding plains. The zone is part of Murcia, which has two other appellations, Jumilla and Yecla.

The climate is Mediterranean with continental features: summers are hot and dry, and winters can be cold. Thanks to the altitude, nights are cool and the grapes keep their freshness and colour.

The main grape is Monastrell (called Mourvèdre in France), a red variety that is deeply coloured and tannic. It gives red wines that are full-bodied, fruity and dark, as well as rosés. Tempranillo, Syrah or Garnacha are often added to Monastrell, making the wine softer. White wines exist too, but there are few.

Bullas is a small appellation. For those who love Monastrell it is an interesting discovery. Bullas is also the name of a town in Murcia, 53 kilometres from the regional capital; after Moratalla it is the highest municipality in Murcia. Monastrell is one of the main red grapes of south-eastern Spain, and in Catalonia it is called Mataró.
