Cabernet Franc reds around the castle town of Chinon in Touraine.

Chinon is a wine appellation in Touraine, in the Loire Valley of France. It is named after the old town of Chinon, with its castle above the Vienne river.

The main grape here is Cabernet Franc. It mostly makes red wines, usually light and fresh, with notes of red berries and herbs. There is also rosé. White wine is made from Chenin Blanc, but there is less of it.

Cabernet Franc on the Loire gives wine with clear acidity and moderate strength. The best sites lie on limestone slopes and sandy terraces by the river. Some wines are drunk young, others are aged for years.

Chinon belongs to the wider Touraine area and to still wines without bubbles. In general it is one of the places where Loire Cabernet Franc shows its character, lighter and more herbal than in Bordeaux.
