A coastal area, home of Calabria's oldest wine.

Cirò is a coastal wine zone in Calabria, at the very "toe" of Italy. It lies in the province of Crotone on the Ionian Sea coast, in the foothills of the Sila massif. The centre of the zone is the communes of Cirò and Cirò Marina. The district is part of Calabria and is regarded as home to one of Calabria's oldest wines.

The main wine is red, made from at least 95% Gaglioppo, to which a little white Greco Bianco and Trebbiano may be added. A rosé is also made. White wine from Greco Bianco (at least 90%) exists too, but there is little of it. The central part is called Cirò Classico. The wines come out dry and rich, with good tannins.

Calabria is mostly a red region: more than nine tenths of its wine is red, and Gaglioppo lies at its base. The region has 12 DOC appellations, but only about 4% of the wine is sold under them.

Next door lies another appellation, Melissa. Together with Cirò it forms the wine coast of Crotone, where vines grow on slopes above the sea.
