🍇 Gaglioppo
The main red grape of Calabria, the base of Cirò wine.
Gaglioppo is the main red grape of Calabria in southern Italy. It is the basis of the famous wine Cirò.
The grape grows on the Ionian coast and the hills of Calabria. It makes Cirò and Cirò Classico, as well as Savuto, Melissa, Bivongi and Sant'Anna di Isola Capo Rizzuto. The berries give an unusual combination: pale colour but noticeable tannins and acidity. The wine tastes of red berries, cherry and herbs, sometimes with a slight bitterness. It goes with meat, tomato sauces and cheese.
According to genetics, Gaglioppo is linked to Sangiovese and Mantonico Bianco, other grapes of southern and central Italy. Calabria is one of the oldest wine-growing regions of Italy, and Gaglioppo is regarded as its calling card. Wines from it range from simple everyday ones to more complex ones able to age. They belong to Italian wine, and the grape appears in many local designations.
