📜 Cornas
A northern Rhône appellation making powerful red wines from Syrah alone.
Cornas is a small appellation in the northern Rhône Valley of France. Only red wines are made here, and only from one grape: Syrah. It is one of the most powerful wines of the Northern Rhône.
The vineyards lie on steep slopes above the Rhône river. The soil is granite, and the slopes face the sun and warm up well. Vines grow on terraces and must be worked by hand. Yields are small.
Cornas wines are dark and dense, with firm tannins and the aroma of black berries, pepper and smoke. In youth they can be harsh, so they are usually aged for several years. They keep well.
Cornas is a still red wine, neither sparkling nor fortified. It stands next to its Northern Rhône neighbours, such as Hermitage, but has its own strict and severe style.
