📜 Dolcetto d'Alba

Appellation ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 2 Updated:

An everyday red wine from Dolcetto grown on the Langhe hills around Alba.

Dolcetto d'Alba is an Italian wine with a protected name (PDO) from Piedmont. It is made on the Langhe hills around the town of Alba. It is a red still wine from the Dolcetto grape and is one of the everyday wines of the area.

The grape's name means little sweet one, but the wine is dry. It is dark in colour, with soft tannins and low acidity. It smells of plum, black cherry and almond. In Piedmont it is usually drunk young, with a meal, rather than aged for years. For the Langhe it plays the role of a simple red at home: it is drunk at the table every day.

The wine is closely tied to the Langhe, where the more famous Barbaresco and Barolo are made nearby from the Nebbiolo grape. Dolcetto ripens earlier than Nebbiolo, so it is planted on less favoured slopes. The grape is found elsewhere in Piedmont, but Alba is regarded as its main home. It is served slightly chilled.
