🥃 Domači rum

Protected spirit name ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 5 Updated:

Slovenian spirit with an EU protected name: a distillate of cane molasses or cane juice with a punch and vanilla aroma and caramel colour; from 37.5% ABV, mainly used in baking.

Domači rum (“home rum”) is a Slovenian spirit with a protected EU name: a distillate of fermented cane molasses or cane juice to which a punch-like aroma with a note of vanilla and caramel colouring are added. The strength is at least 37.5% ABV. It may be made anywhere in Slovenia.

Why it is not just rum. Under Regulation (EU) 2019/787 rum cannot be flavoured, so domači rum is registered in the group of “other spirit drinks”. The rulebook in Uradni list RS 70/2010 requires a cane distillate of no more than 96% ABV, a characteristic aroma, a reddish-brown caramel colour, dry extract up to 20 g/l, and sale only in factory packaging.

History. Slovenia was part of Austria-Hungary, which had no tropical colonies, so producers replaced the cane aroma with a mix of flavourings and colourants. This gave rise to the “rum” and later to domači rum; according to the ministry’s technical documentation, the name appeared at the same time as the Austrian Inländerrum. Industrial distilleries began making it before the First World War.

Today. The technical documentation describes domači rum as the spirit most produced and consumed in Slovenia. It is most often poured into dough and fillings: potica, krofi doughnuts, rum balls, flancati. A drink of up to 80% ABV may be placed on the market.

Why this matters to you. Domači rum is a flavoured spirit with a history, not rum in the EU sense: the aroma comes from added substances. For baking it is measured by the teaspoon, but the alcohol stays in uncooked fillings. WHO reminds that there is no safe amount of alcohol.
