🥃 Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel
A version of Elijah Craig: aged Small Batch finished in a second, new, toasted and charred barrel; 47% ABV (94 proof); since 2020.
Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel is a bourbon from the Elijah Craig brand that receives a second barrel. The base is fully aged Elijah Craig Small Batch. Its strength is 94 proof, or 47% ABV, and there is no age statement. According to The Whiskey Wash, the version was released in September 2020.
According to Heaven Hill, the bourbon is moved into a new barrel which, together with Independent Stave Company, is specially toasted over a medium heat and then quickly charred. The staves are white oak air-dried for 18 months. According to The Whiskey Wash, the aim is to bring out notes of dark sugar. The barrels are new and charred, so the spirit remains a Kentucky Straight Bourbon.
Why this matters to you. Compare it with Elijah Craig Small Batch: the grain and strength are the same, and the difference comes from the second barrel. A similar idea for rye is Elijah Craig Toasted Rye, but that is a separate spirit. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe dose of alcohol.
