🥃 Elijah Craig Straight Rye
Rye whiskey of the Elijah Craig brand: a Kentucky straight rye with 51% rye in the mash; 47% ABV (94 proof), no age statement.
Elijah Craig Straight Rye is a rye whiskey from the Elijah Craig brand, a Kentucky straight rye from Heaven Hill. Its strength is 94 proof, or 47% ABV, the same as Elijah Craig Small Batch. There is no age statement. Drinkhacker reviewed it in April 2020.
According to Difford's Guide and Drinkhacker, the mash bill is 51% rye, 35% corn and 14% malted barley. 51% is the minimum share of rye with which a whiskey in the US can be called rye whiskey. The brand's website describes it as a whiskey with extra ageing, but does not give an exact age.
Why this matters to you. Rye makes up only a little more than half of the mash, so the flavour is softer than that of a whiskey with 90–95% rye. Compare it with Elijah Craig Small Batch: the strength is the same, but the base is rye rather than corn. Toasted Rye and Barrel Proof Rye are separate versions with a different barrel or strength. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe dose of alcohol.
