American neutral grain spirit brand owned by Luxco; the strongest version is 190 proof, about 95% ABV; 151 and 120 proof also exist; restricted in some states.

Everclear is an American brand of neutral grain spirit made by Luxco. Its best-known version is 190 proof, or about 95% ABV, which makes it one of the strongest alcoholic products sold freely in the United States. There are also 151 and 120 proof versions, and in some states sales of the strongest one are restricted or banned.

History. Luxco, called David Sherman Corporation until 2006, is a St. Louis company founded in 1958; it acquired the Everclear label in 1981. Sources disagree on when the drink first appeared: 1950 is given as the trademark registration date, yet products of that name are mentioned in publications from the 1920s and 1930s. The oldest grain alcohol of this type is often said to be Graves Grain Alcohol from 1860.

How it is made. According to Tasting Table, the strongest version is corn distilled many times into a neutral spirit; VinePair adds that potatoes or beets can also be used. Until 2018 the labels carried a flammability warning, which was removed after a redesign.

Rules. The number of states banning 190 proof differs between sources, from 11 to 16, because the lists are dated differently. Some states allow the strongest version only with a permit, and the FAA classes it as dangerous goods. The 151 and 120 proof versions are available far more widely, though some states set age and quantity limits on them too.

Why this matters to you. This is a neutral spirit, not a ready-to-drink product: it is meant for diluting and for making infusions, not for drinking neat. It is highly flammable, so keep it away from open flame. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.

Frequently asked questions

Is it true that Everclear is banned in every US state?

No. The strongest 190 proof version is restricted or banned only in some states, and sources give anywhere from 11 to 16 states. The 151 proof version is more widely available.

What is the ABV of Everclear?

The 190 proof version is about 95% ABV, 151 proof is 75.5% ABV, and 120 proof is 60% ABV. The conversion is simple: ABV is half the proof.

Who makes Everclear?

Luxco of St. Louis, formerly David Sherman Corporation. The company acquired the label in 1981.

What is Everclear made from?

Corn is named as the base, although VinePair notes that other raw materials can be used. The spirit is distilled many times until it is neutral.

Why is Everclear dangerous?

Because of its high strength and flammability. That is why the FAA classes the strongest version as dangerous goods, and why the maker printed a matching warning until 2018.
