An island in the centre of the country.

Funen (Fyn) is an island in the centre of Denmark, between the Jutland peninsula and the island of Zealand, and one of the regions of Danish winemaking. Denmark is a country in northern Europe with a cool maritime climate, where winegrowing became commercial only around 2000, when European Union rules allowed it. Since then there have been more vineyards.

Funen's climate is milder than in the north of the country: summers are moderate and humid, and autumns are often dry. It is one of the warmest areas in Denmark. Vineyards occupy south-facing hill slopes and small plots by the sea. Because of the cool climate, mostly early varieties and disease-resistant hybrids are grown: Solaris and Rondo. They make light white and red wines, and sparkling ones too.

Funen wine is usually drunk on the spot: estates are small and winemakers often welcome visitors. The island is known as the garden of Denmark, with apple orchards, and wine here continues this tradition.

Funen is part of Danish winemaking. If you come across Danish wine, it is most likely white or sparkling, light and fresh. Funen's whites are served with fish and seafood in Danish cooking, and the sparkling as an aperitif. The name Funen on a label shows that the grapes grew in this very area, which makes it easy to look for similar wines.
