🏷️ Georgian PDO wines
More than 20 protected wine names in Georgia, such as Tsinandali and Kindzmarauli.
Georgian PDO wines are more than twenty wines with a protected designation of origin in Georgia. PDO stands for protected designation of origin. The name guarantees that the wine was made in a particular area from grapes grown there, under set rules.
Among them are Tsinandali, Mukuzani, Teliani, Kindzmarauli, Khvanchkara and Napareuli. Tsinandali is a white wine from Rkatsiteli and Mtsvane. Kindzmarauli is a semi-sweet red from Saperavi. Saperavi and Rkatsiteli are the country’s main grapes.
Many wines are made the traditional way in qvevri, large clay vessels buried in the ground. This method is on UNESCO’s list of intangible heritage. But modern wines are also made in steel tanks and in barrels.
The National Wine Agency of Georgia oversees control. The list of PDOs shows how varied Georgian wine is, from white and amber to red. They belong to Georgian wine as a whole. Alcohol is for adults.
