π Rkatsiteli
An ancient white grape of Georgia; also widely grown in Moldova and Ukraine.
Rkatsiteli is an ancient white grape from Georgia. Its name in Georgian means "red stem" or "red vine": the stalks and shoots are reddish. It is one of the most widely grown grapes in the world and is thousands of years old.
The home of the grape is Kakheti in eastern Georgia. There wines are made from it in two ways. The first is European: a light, fresh white wine. The second is traditional: fermentation in clay qvevri together with the skins. Such a wine is amber, and is called orange. It is tannic, with notes of dried fruit and nuts. Known Kakhetian names include Tsinandali, Gurjaani, Vazisubani, Manavi, Kardenakhi and Napareuli.
The grape also grows widely outside Georgia: in Moldova, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and in southern Ukraine, in the Odesa, Mykolaiv, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions and in Shabo. Brandy is made from it too.
Rkatsiteli belongs to Georgian wine and to the general list of grapes. The grape is hardy and keeps its acidity even in the heat.
