๐ Grechetto
A white grape of central Italy, used in Orvieto wines.
Grechetto is a white grape from central Italy, from Umbria and neighbouring Lazio. The name sounds Greek, but the variety is Italian. It goes into blends for many wines of the region.
Its best-known use is in Orvieto, where Grechetto is blended with Procanico and other varieties. It also appears in the wines of Torgiano, Todi, Montefalco and Colli Martani. In Tuscany, semi-dried Grechetto is used for the dessert wine Vin Santo di Montepulciano.
Wine from Grechetto is pale, with soft acidity and notes of pear, almond and flowers. It goes well with fish and white meat. Its thick skin and firm flesh make the berry suitable for drying.
Grechetto belongs to Italian wine as one of its local grapes. It is rarely bottled on its own outside Umbria, but it often makes wines fuller and more aromatic. Alcohol is for adults.
