🥃 Haig Club
Single grain Scotch whisky from Haig, distilled at Cameronbridge (Fife): 90% wheat and 10% malted barley, column still, bourbon casks; 40% ABV; since 2014.
Haig Club is a single grain Scotch whisky from the Haig brand, which Diageo introduced in 2014. It is made at the Cameronbridge distillery in Fife, which John Haig founded in 1824. It is bottled at 40% ABV and carries no age statement. Unlike the other Haig expressions, this is not a blend but a whisky from one distillery.
According to Difford's Guide, the mash is 90% wheat and 10% malted barley. Distillation takes place in a column still: the spirit comes off at 94.8% and is diluted to 68.5% before it goes into casks. The whisky matures for roughly six to seven years in three types of ex-bourbon casks: first-fill, refill and rejuvenated. Whiskypedia also mentions a Clubman version from 2016.
Why this matters to you. “Single grain” does not mean “from one grain”: it means one distillery, and the mash here contains both wheat and barley. Haig Gold Label and Haig Dimple 15 Year Old are blends in which grain whisky is combined with malt whiskies from other distilleries. Check the type of Scotch on the label. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
