🥃 Hennessy X.O
Hennessy cognac at 40% ABV with the X.O designation; according to Difford's Guide, more than 100 eaux-de-vie from four crus; the designation was created by Maurice Hennessy in 1870.
Hennessy X.O is a cognac from the Hennessy house at 40% ABV with the X.O designation, meaning Extra Old. Under AOC Cognac rules the youngest eau-de-vie must be at least ten years old. It is the top expression of the core V.S, V.S.O.P, X.O range; according to the house, the designation was created by Maurice Hennessy in 1870.
According to Difford's Guide, the blend consists of more than 100 cognac eaux-de-vie from Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies and Fins Bois. No exact age is stated on the bottle. The Hennessy heritage page adds that Maurice Hennessy first made X.O for family and friends, and that it is now regarded as a world reference for cognac. Distillation is double, in a Charentais still, with maturation in oak casks.
Why this matters to you. X.O does not mean exactly ten years: much older eaux-de-vie may be in the blend, and ten is only the lower limit. Do not compare it directly with Paradis, which has no age designation. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
