The chalky albariza soils, home of sherry.

Jerez (Marco de Jerez) is a wine area in southern Spain, the home of sherry, with chalky soils. The Sherry Triangle, or Marco de Jerez, is a wine area in southern Spain, in Andalusia, where sherry is made. Its corners are three towns: Jerez de la Frontera, Sanlúcar de Barrameda and El Puerto de Santa María. Vineyards and cellars lie between them.

The main feature of the area is the white, chalky albariza soil. It is pale, reflects the sun, hardens in summer and keeps winter moisture, which the vine uses in the heat. The main grape is Palomino. Others are Pedro Ximénez and Moscatel, used for sweet wines.

Each town adds its own shade to sherry. Sanlúcar de Barrameda stands by the ocean, and there manzanilla is made, the lightest and freshest type. In Jerez and El Puerto other kinds of sherry are aged. The cool, damp air from the Atlantic matters for the special layer of yeast under which the wine matures.

It is a historic area. Only wine from this triangle may be called sherry.
