Grape variety βœ” Checked: 10.2026 Β· sources: 3

A white German grape crossed in 1929 from Schiava and Riesling.

Kerner is a white grape from Germany. It was bred in 1929 by crossing the red grape Schiava (called Trollinger in Germany) with white Riesling. It is a new variety by wine standards, created in Weinsberg in south-west Germany.

It is named after the poet and doctor Justinus Kerner, who lived in that region and loved wine. From Riesling the grape inherited fresh acidity and fruity aroma, and from Schiava its resistance to cold. The grape tolerates winter frost well, so it is grown in cool areas.

Kerner grows in the Pfalz and Rheinhessen, and also in South Tyrol (Alto Adige) in northern Italy, where it is especially valued. The wine is fresh and aromatic, with notes of apple, peach and flowers. It is similar to Riesling, but usually simpler and cheaper.

Kerner is a parent of other German varieties such as Juwel and Silcher, both crossed with Silvaner. It is used in breeding for frost hardiness.
