🍇 Trollinger
A red grape, the main one in Germany's Württemberg; in Italy it is called Schiava Grossa.
Trollinger is a red grape, the main one in Germany's Württemberg. In Italy, in South Tyrol, the same grape is called Schiava Grossa. Its berries are light, and the wines are light, fruity, low in tannins, reddish but not dense.
In Württemberg Trollinger wine is loved and drunk in quantity: it is simple, fresh and pleasant. It is served in glasses of 0.25 litres. The area around Stuttgart, Remstal and the Württemberg Unterland is the main centre of the grape. The wine is among the Swabian regional wines. In Italy the grape is grown in Alto Adige, in the Lago di Caldaro area. There its wines are often lighter and softer.
New varieties descend from Trollinger too, such as Kerner (Trollinger × Riesling) and Helfensteiner. Trollinger is an example of a grape with two names in two countries and two different fates. It is best drunk young and slightly chilled.
