🍽️ Kitchen
Home cooking with milk.
A kitchen is a place where food is cooked. At home, this is where milk turns into dishes: porridge, pancakes, omelettes, soups, sauces, baked goods and cocoa. This is also where the fridge stands, keeping milk, kefir, cheese and butter.
A modern kitchen usually has a cooker, a sink with hot and cold water, a fridge, worktops and cupboards. Many people also have a microwave and a dishwasher. It was not always like this. In the Middle Ages, the kitchen was often built separately from the living rooms because of smoke and the risk of fire.
People started planning convenient kitchens in the 20th century. In 1913 the American Christine Frederick suggested arranging the kitchen so that the housewife walked less and got less tired. In 1926 the architect Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky created the “Frankfurt kitchen” for social housing. It was compact, 1.9 by 3.4 metres. It was built in about 10,000 flats and became the model for the modern fitted kitchen. A tip for milk dishes: milk on the stove easily burns and boils over. So heat it over medium heat and stir it.
