🥃 Lagavulin Distillers Edition
Lagavulin line, matured twice, including in ex-Pedro Ximénez sherry casks; 43% ABV; limited batches.
Lagavulin Distillers Edition is a peated single malt from Islay which the producer describes as matured twice, including in ex-Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. Its strength is 43% ABV, the same as the 16 Year Old. The producer's page presents it as a release marked with the year 2006 and a limited number of bottles.
Production. The base is the same smoky Lagavulin, to which a second maturation in ex-bodega Pedro Ximénez casks is added. Under the Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009, single malt Scotch matures for at least three years in Scotland; the producer gives no exact age here. According to its description, the nose combines peat, vanilla and raisin sweetness, while the palate shows sweetness, malt character, smoke, salt, coffee and vanilla, with a very long finish.
Why it matters to you. Distillers Edition is chosen when you want to combine smoky Lagavulin with a sweeter sherry accent. Compare it with the 16 Year Old, which is drier, and with Sweet Peat, whose sweetness comes from a bourbon cask. Check the release year and strength on the label. The WHO reminds us that no level of alcohol consumption is safe.
