📜 Mâcon

Appellation ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 1

Wines from around Mâcon in southern Burgundy, chiefly whites from Chardonnay.

Mâcon is an appellation in southern Burgundy, around the town of Mâcon in France. It belongs to the Mâconnais area. The name is protected as a PDO. Mostly white wines from Chardonnay are made here, as well as reds from Gamay and a little rosé. All the wines are still, without bubbles.

Mâcon wines are usually simpler and more affordable than wines from the north of Burgundy. White Mâcon is fresh, with notes of apple, pear and citrus, and suits fish, chicken and cheese. The reds are light and fruity and drunk young.

Within Mâcon there are more precise names: Mâcon-Villages and names of individual villages. They point to the better sites and give more expressive wines. Plain Mâcon is regarded as the basic level.

The area is known for gentle hills, vineyards and small villages. Here, as across Burgundy, wines are named by place of origin rather than by grape, although Chardonnay predominates. Mâcon is a convenient starting point for getting to know Burgundian Chardonnay.
