A red French grape from around Toulouse, with violet-scented wines.
Négrette is a red French grape from around Toulouse in south-western France. Its wines smell of violets.
The main area is Fronton, where the grape is a local pride. Négrette grows on light soils and gives thin-skinned berries and wines with soft tannins. In the glass it is a pale red wine with aromas of violet, liquorice and red berries. Négrette is used for red and rosé wines. In Fronton the wine is usually blended from several grapes, and Négrette makes up a significant share.
The surrounding region is called the South-West of France. It includes the upper country with Cahors, Gaillac and Fronton. Fronton wines are light and fresh and are good served slightly chilled.
