📜 Monbazillac

Appellation ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 3

A well-known sweet white wine from nobly rotten grapes, made south of Bergerac.

Monbazillac is a sweet white wine from south-west France, made south of the town of Bergerac. It is a protected appellation. In autumn, morning mist lies over the river, and the days are warm and dry, so noble rot develops on the berries.

The fungus Botrytis cinerea draws water out of the berries and the sugar becomes more concentrated. Harvest is done in several passes, because berries ripen and shrivel unevenly. The wine is made from three grapes: Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. The result is a sweet, aromatic wine with notes of honey, apricot and citrus.

Monbazillac belongs to white sweet wine. It is linked to Bergerac, where dry wines are made too. It is often served with foie gras, blue cheese and desserts. It is compared with the better-known Sauternes from nearby Bordeaux, but is usually cheaper. Sweet wine is served in small glasses.
