📜 Morgon
A Beaujolais cru with firm red wines from Gamay that age well.
Morgon is one of the ten crus of Beaujolais, an area in eastern France north of Lyon. Red wines are made here from the Gamay grape. Morgon is known for dense, full wines that age well. Locals say the wine morgonne, meaning it takes on a resemblance to red Burgundy with age.
The vineyards lie on slopes around the village of the same name. The best slope, Côte du Py, is made of volcanic rock, and the soils contain schist and granite. These soils give the wines a mineral edge and power. The wine smells of cherry, plum and spice. Many producers age it for a few years.
Morgon is protected under a PDO. It belongs to northern Beaujolais, where the ten crus, the best villages of the region, lie. It is a still red wine made from a single grape, Gamay. Unlike light Beaujolais Nouveau, Morgon can be cellared and then served with game, poultry and meat.
